Everything you need to know about Mellor Bespoke
The process
-
Mellor jeans start at $750.oo AUD, with exact pricing calculated based on your selection of denim, hardware and design details.
This will be paid over two instalments, with a 50% deposit due after our first meeting, and final payment due at collection.
If you have any other tailoring projects in mind, please feel free to reach out! Also, keep an eye on the horizon for Mellor bespoke trouser and made-to-measure shirt offerings, coming soon.
-
In our first meeting, I will travel to meet you at a convenient location to discuss denim, style, how you wear your clothes, and what you as the client have in mind for your jeans.
You will be offered appropriate selections of denim for your desired project, and I will talk you through the specifics of the cloth and its origins. The fun, nerdy stuff.
Once we have established the design details, including thread colour and hardware, you will have your measurements taken and figuration noted, all to form the foundation of your individual pattern.
At the end of the consultation, a 50% payment will be taken to secure your chosen cloth and begin the pattern making process ahead of your next fitting.
-
Once your measurements and figuration have been noted, an individual pattern will be drafted for your project. This will act as the blueprint for your bespoke jeans, and will be kept on file for any future projects.
Your chosen denim will then be marked out with your pattern and cut by hand. The cut pieces are first constructed using a combination of temporary and permanent stitching, and fitted with a false waistband. This allows you to try on your jeans and examine the fit for any potential alterations before the final stitches are laid.
-
Your garment is ready for your first fitting! We will meet at a mutually agreeable time for you to try on your jeans and see how they feel.
Any fit issues will be marked and all necessary alterations will be made to both your new jeans and your pattern ahead of their completion and final fitting.
-
Having examined the fit and design details, your jeans will be taken back to the Mellor atelier where they will go through their final stages of making.
Any alterations that were identified in the fitting will be applied to both your pattern and garment. Once adjusted, the permanent waistband, belt loops and hardware are attached. Fin.
-
Your jeans are now ready and will be complete with waistband, full stitching, hand sewn buttonholes and hardware. They will also have been washed to remove any chalk marks from the making process, and soften the cloth for wear.
Trying on your complete jeans, any alterations will have been addressed after the first fitting. They will fit snug after washing, however this is intentional and will relax quickly with wear.
You new jeans are ready to take home and your final 50% payment will be due upon collection.
Cut and crafted locally by one pair of hands from start to finish, each pair of Mellor jeans are tailored to your individual measurements and design specifications. After more than ten years dedicated to honing the craft of pattern cutting and tailoring in both London and Melbourne, Mellor is proud to introduce a bespoke denim service that offers a unique approach to construction, placing fit above tradition.
Hand Cut
Mellor Bespoke jeans are constructed from a curated selection of dead-stock and inventory, selvedge denim—including those from Mellor’s personal collection of fabrics. These narrow width bolts are expertly woven on old shuttle looms and have the characteristic selvedge ID.
Selvedge Denim
In the tradition of tailoring houses, we do offer a house style that has been developed over numerous pairs made for both customers, friends and personal projects. This is a mid-to-high-rise, button fly, with a roomy leg and seat, and a leg-opening/hem width calculated based on your height and shoe size to ensure flattering proportions.
However, this is far from fixed. Ultimately we want you to walk away with a perfectly fitting pair of jeans that resonate with you and reflect your personal style.
House Style
The average pair of jeans are made using upwards of twelve machines that all serve an individual purpose, it’s quite remarkable seeing them all working in harmony. However, at Mellor we have developed a far more minimal approach, constructing each pair of jeans using only two Juki machines—a three thread overlocker and a single-needle lockstitch machine—with buttonholes sewn by hand.
Our Machines
Every pair of Mellor jeans are made with longevity in mind. However, like anything worth preserving, the key to longevity lies in regular maintenance and care. This means addressing mending needs before they become more serious—a small hole can become a big hole very quickly. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about repairs or require some maintenance on your Mellor jeans.
Mending & Alterations
Jeans are meant to be worn and lived in, and like any regularly worn item of clothing, this will equal regular washing. The most important wash is the first one. If you are keen on developing distinct and high-contrast fades, we recommend wearing your jeans for up to six months before the first wash. This will give you those deep fades that many revere. However, if you want that classic, even, vintage washed fade, then wash them as much as you would like and don’t worry about the six month rule. All Mellor Jeans will come to you pre-shrunk, ensuring fewer variables when fitting and reducing concerns of shrinking when washing at home. As the garment is worn, it will adapt to the wearer’s body and, as they are made from 100% cotton, the cloth will naturally stretch and contract with each wash.
We recommend washing your jeans inside out, on a cold cycle (30°C is fine), hanging to dry out of direct sunlight wherever possible. Wear, wash and enjoy!
Each pair of Mellor jeans comes with detailed care instructions.
